Furnaces And Heat Pumps

We repair the two common kinds of home heating.

Gas And Electric Furnaces

A furnace makes heat by burning gas or warming an electric coil. A blower then pushes that warm air through your ducts.

Smell gas right now? Get everyone outside, then call 911 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, do the same.

Heat Pumps And Heat Strips

A heat pump moves heat from the outdoor air into the house. On cold nights, electric heat strips help it keep up.

What A No-Heat Visit Checks

A technician starts with the simple causes, then works inward.

  • The thermostat: its setting, its batteries and whether it calls for heat.
  • The power: the breaker and the shutoff switch beside the unit.
  • The airflow: a clogged filter can make a furnace shut itself off.
  • On a gas furnace: the igniter, the flame sensor and the burners.
  • On a heat pump: the outdoor unit, the reversing valve and the heat strips.

We write down what we found and what it takes to fix it. If a repair needs a part, you approve the price first.

Heating Checks Before You Call

A few checks take a minute and sometimes bring the heat back.

  • Set the thermostat to Heat, a few degrees above the room.
  • Replace the thermostat's batteries if its screen is blank.
  • Check the breaker for the furnace or the air handler.
  • Look at the filter, and replace it if it's gray or clogged.
  • Keep leaves and debris clear of the outdoor heat pump.

If the house is still cold, call us or request a visit.

Heat Pump Defrost And Steam

In cold, damp weather, a heat pump's outdoor coil can frost over. It runs a defrost cycle to clear it, and steam may rise.

That is normal and lasts a few minutes. Ice that stays for hours is worth a call.

Replacing An Old Heating System

Some systems are worth fixing, and some are worn out. Ask us for the replacement price beside the repair price.
